Dragons v Scarlets - Life Music Foundation Charity kit - YOU decide!

Newport Gwent Dragons are delighted to announce that they are supporting local charity Life Music Foundation, which improves the lives of disadvantaged youngsters through music.

To help raise vital funds, the region is commissioning a specially designed Dragons shirt, which will be worn by the players for the crunch match against the Scarlets on December 30th, at Rodney Parade.

Unlike previous years, this charity shirt will be available for general sale before Christmas, through the internet and through a number of retail outlets. Some local young designers have come up with 4 designs, and the charity would like you, the Newport Gwent Dragons supporters, to help choose the shirt.

We would like you to vote on your favourite shirt and give feedback on which you think will sell the best, as this will mean the Life Music project can expand even more. Please vote on your favourite and you will be entered into a draw to win 2 hospitality tickets for the Dragons v Scarlets match.

To vote click on the following link – here

For more information or to express an interest into pre ordering a shirt, please email info@lifemusicfoundation.org.

Unfortunately 2 of our World Cup stars are unavailable for tomorrows clash against James ‘ook’s Perpignan – Luke is out with a wrist injury (which he has revealed, he picked up in the opening game against S.A. despite playing in every game thereafter!), and during last weeks game, Danny Lydiate picked up recurrence of the ankle injury he picked up in the RWC – although according to Darren Edwards, he was lucky not to have his leg broken, such was the ferocity of the tackle.

So tomorrows game sees us defending our position at the top of the group, but with a strong USAP team, with a matchday squad full of players of the calibre of Mermoz, Mas and ‘Ook, it’s not going to be an easy ride – so maybe the 16th man on the terraces can make a difference! SEE YOU THERE!!!

Dragons v Ulster

So… finally… A team sheet is up on the front page(OK, the image above is the wrong way around, but I haven’t got the files on me, so stop moaning ;) ), and there’s even some words to go with it. The big news is, of course, the first start for “The fastest man in World rugby”, new winger Tonderai Chavhanga, and it looks as if he has brought the weather with him. Our injury situation was a great concern to most of us, but it seems that has eased with the naming of Smith, Riley and Poole in the backline for this game, which is cracking news. We have also got 2 players hoping they can turn a few heads on the bench, as they move up from the premiereship – Pontypool fullback Geraint O’Driscoll and Bedwas prop Keiron Jenkins – good luck lads.

Anyway, the team…

One other thing to note is that the referee is Neil Patterson of the SRU. However, despite his Scottish credentials, he was born Belfast back in 1975… DO NOT UPSET THE DAVEY!!!

OK, so it’s not what we were hoping to get to you at this point…

But the season starts at RP Saturday at 18:30, and I for one cannot wait to get on the terrace and get back into the action. After a disappointing, albeit difficult, start to the season away to the European Champions and the Magners/Robocop champions (albeit shorn of (some) of their best players, not unlike ourselves), we come home to reboot the season against Aironi.

Newport Gwent Dragons
15 Martyn Thomas, 14 Adam Hughes, 13 Tom Riley, 12 Pat Leach, 11 Mike Poole, 10 Jason Tovey, 9 Wayne Evans, 1 Phil Price, 2 Tom Willis, 3 Dan Way, 4 Adam Jones, 5 Rob Sidoli, 6 Lewis Evans, 7 Gavin Thomas, 8 Andrew Coombs

Replacements
16 Rhys Buckley, 17 Nathan Williams, 18 Nathan Buck, 19 Darren Waters , 20 Jevon Groves, 21 Joe Bedford, 22 Matthew Jones, 23 Matthew Pewtner

So, let’s get down to the Parade for the first ‘proper’ Dragons game in our new look home. I’m like a kid on Christmas eve mun… I may need to buy some TennaBlokeys.

Charteris to take over kicking duties for the remainder of the season.

Sources in the Dragons have revealed that, due to Jason Tovey’s slight dip in form with the boot, that head coach Darren Edwards has been looking at alternative kickers to ease the burden on the young No 10’s shoulders for the end of season’s run of games. The testing throughout the squad has revealed that the giant lock is the most accurate kicker, and has an impressive range, slotting them over from beyond the halfway line with an impressive 88% success rate.

Tovey remained pragmatic, and has admitted that his form change had been a part of an attempt to change his style slightly “I was trying to change something. It’s not broken, now it’s slowly coming back together,” he said.

Charteris practicing kicking earlier this week.

Luke Charteris, who began his career as an outside half, but progressed first out into the centres, then the backrow, and finally lock, as he lost his pace whilst gaining in size and bulk, said “Whilst it’s a big honour to be asked to step up, it’s a daunting task to take on the responsibilities with the boot. It’s not a unfamiliar position for me, having played most of my youth rugby at 10, and been the team kicker in the early part of my career at Camborne RFC. Darren (Edwards) has made it clear that Jason will still be first choice in the future, but for the season run in he felt it was a good idea to let Jason concentrate on the tactical kicking and getting the backs moving in attack and to take the pressure of him, starting this weekend at Treviso”
